1900 and 1904 Tonga Is 3d SG44 bisected on two covers from Vavau to make the correct 2 1/2 d foreign letter rate together with 1d SG39, see footnote in Stanley Gibbons. This pair of commercial letters has a number of imperfections such as careless opening, part of the flaps missing and folding, which is not affecting the stamps. On the plus side apart from the rarity is that the older one went via German Samoa and has a transit mark Kaiserlich Deutsche Postagentur. Its final destination was England and the other went to New Zealand possibly via a different route. Both show arrival marks to document the correct postal transit. Tonga Inseln Halbierungen der Mi.Nr. 43 auf zwei Bedarfsbriefen mit Zusatzfrankatur Mi.Nr. 40. Bedarfsmäßige Halbierungen sind sehr selten und im Zusammenhang mit dem Durchgang durch die deutsche Kolonie Samoa ein besonderer Leckerbissen der Südsee Philatelie. Die Bedarfsmängel an den Belegen sind im Vergleich zur Seltenheit absolut tolerierbar.
